Yesterday I took my mum, who’s over visiting me, on a day trip to Bex, a town in Switzerland famous for its salt mines. After the guided tour of the mines we decided to treat ourselves to a meal at the restaurant on site. As a lacto-vegetarian, I’m used to having to go for a salad and/or a cheese dish when I eat out. I did ask about just having side dishes but it wasn’t an option.

My five  secrets for eating out  consciously came in very handy. They are

    1. Savour (and sip)
    2. Sharing is sociable
    3. Season well
    4. Starter over sweet
    5. To drink or not to drink

Learn more about these points here.

This weekend I was catching up with an old friend (we’ve known each other secondary school). She told me that’s she’s feeling completely drained at the moment because of how hard she’s working for her business and also at home. Her immediate response has been to turn to food for comfort – sound familiar?

So I’m going to share with you 10 of my “key ingredients” to enhancing your energy levels using nutrition.

Note: I’ve classed them into essential and optional but highly advised so you know which are the most important

    1. chewing your food properly – essential
2.eating your food calmly and spending a few moments relaxing before getting up – essential
    3. a healthy diet, rich in freshly prepared whole grains, fresh, organic and seasonal fruit and vegetables – essential
    4. limiting alcohol, caffeine and sugar consumption – essential
    5. hot ginger tea – optional but highly advised
    6. nourishing warming foods (even in summer) – optional but highly advised
    7. drinking sufficient water away from meals and avoiding very cold drinks- essential
    8. reducing your intake of dairy products - essential
    9. learn nutritional information to help yourself and apply it – essential
    10. use herbs and spices, e.g. ginger, parsley, basil, to season well – optional but highly advised

Are you wondering why they are useful?

Reason 1 – to enhance the digestive process
In Ayurvedic nutrition, our digestive ability or “agni” is important for our immune system and to nourish us. If it is low, toxins or “ama” can accumulate in the body. In both nutrition systems of Ayurveda and Traditional Chinese Medicine cooked food is preferred because it reduces the chances of contracting disease. It also strengthens the body’s resistance to disease since the nutrients are more easily absorbed through the digestive tract.

Reason 2 – to limit toxins in and remove them from the body.
Toxins or “ama” that accumulate in the body mean it has difficulty to digest food properly. Toxins from this undigested food are stored in the tissues. There are also toxins that form in the mind from not being able to process our experiences. Toxins result in blockages within the body.

Exercise to start you using the “ingredients”
1.Think about which ingredient would you use to achieve each reason.
    2. Sort the “ingredients” into two lists according to this criteria.
    3. Now prioritize – which 2 ingredients do you feel you can use today? Which 3 by the end of the week? What resources do you need to use the rest?

One of my subscribers sent me this link yesterday to an article about how US consumers are” feeling the pinch” with the rising prices for food. I felt sad as I read it but  my spirits rose when I read the comments posted. The debate was lively and interesting and clearly indicated that the article only showed part of the picture. What’s more, the points made sounded familiar.

They included eating according to the season; buying fresh, organic local produce; preparing food yourself;  getting together with your friends to cook  and share costs and knowledge; eating less in quantity but not in quality; using herbs and spices in food. All of these points are easy enough to follow when you’re not counting the pennies but more of a challenge if you are. Yet the posts show it’s possible even on a small budget to eat well and find resources to help you do so. I particularly like the comment saying “cooking is easy (you just have to believe, which is really the key to life)”.
For me that said it all – it’s all down to your attitude, which is the topic of the 1st key in my free e-course “5 nutritional keys to vitality in your life“.

I am a vegetarian and also the founder of Nutri-Jyoti, my nutritional consultancy business where I teach busy professionals, not unlike myself, how to use nutritional techniques to improve their energy levels quickly and easily. I use all these techniques myself because my own lifestyle is much like that of my clients – filled (with good things, of course :) .

So what’s the purpose of this blog?   There are several really. For me it’ll be a chance

-to interact more with my clients and readers. I’m getting increasingly more mail from subscribers. Each time I reply to them individually I think that it would be great to be able to share their and my comments easily with others.
    - to share my reflections about interesting current nutritional subjects  quickly rather than having to wait to write an article about it for my newsletter.
    - to post the latest articles from my newsletters much more easily.  And
    - just be freer in how I express myself on topics that are close to my heart.
